John Beale Bordley attended the Kent County Free School (which became Washington College). He was taught and tutored by schoolmaster Charles Peale which marked a long friendship between the Bordleys and the Peales.

Bordley, along with other benefactors, send Charles Wilson Peale to London to study painting with Benjamin West in 1767.

Wye Island is John Beale Bordley’s plantation.
