This image was tkaen at the 225th commemoration of the formation of The Society of the Cincinnati across the Hudson River in the town of Newburgh. The society was formed in 1783. The idea was lead by General Henry Knox, and George Washington was voted its first president. One month’s salary was contributed by each member.

Its purpose was to support fellow officers and families of those who served in the Continental Army for compensation promised to each of them for their service.

Today, the society has a museum in Washington, DC with a research library dedicated to preserving and educating the public about all aspects of the American Revolution through publications

and lecture programs.
